A new procedure significantly and painlessly reduces abnormal uterine bleeding, a pathology that affects almost a third of women of reproductive age. It's called SEAD, and this spherical intrauterine device was presented at the 4th World Hysteroscopy Congress, which took place this week in Sitges (Barcelona).
This almost non-invasive procedure is used to remove the lining of the uterus and reduce the amount of menstrual bleeding. It does not require hospitalization or general anesthesia. Patients can return home the same day as the intervention and have a low risk of complications.
As explained by Dr. Sergio Haimovich, head of the Gynecology Service at Laniado University Hospital (in Netanya, Israel) and president of the Hysteroscopy section of the American Association of Gynecological Laparoscopy (AAGL), “the SEAD device is especially indicated for women who frequently have heavy menstrual bleeding and do not want to have more children, as well as for those who do not wish to undergo long-term hormonal therapies».
As for its mechanism of action, insertion of the device lasts five minutes and the substances that make up the ball dissolve immediately. Thus, they form a paste that spreads over the surface of the endometrium, healing the capillary blood vessels.

The procedure has already been tested in a multicenter study, to be published soon, carried out during a period of six months among premenopausal women who had heavy menstrual bleeding. In it, those who used the spherical device had a reduction of 81% in bleeding.
Furthermore, on a scale of 0 to 10, they rated their pain level at an average of 2. Thus, the authors concluded that SEAD is a “procedure.”safe and effective in the treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding.
