It is a prayer for protection, said in times of fear, danger and persecution.

I will walk clothed and armed with the weapons of Saint George, so that my enemies, having feet, will not reach me; having hands, will not seize me; having eyes, will not see me; and not even in thought will they be able to harm me. Firearms will not reach my body; knives and spears will break without touching my body; ropes and chains will snap without binding my body.

Jesus Christ, protect and defend me with the power of your holy and divine grace. Virgin of Nazareth, cover me with your sacred and divine mantle, protecting me in all my sorrows and afflictions. And God, with his divine mercy and great power, be my defender against the wickedness and persecution of my enemies. Glorious Saint George, in the name of God, extend your shield and your mighty weapons in my defense. He is said to have been martyred around the year 303 for refusing to renounce the Christian faith during the persecution under Emperor Diocletian.

The details of his life came down through tradition, and the legend of the dragon appeared centuries later as an image of good winning over evil. The Church celebrates Saint George on April 23.

Keep reading on the next page →

Pages: 1 2 3 4

What the prayer asks

The prayer uses a soldier’s language: weapons, shield, enemies. The meaning is to ask for God’s protection against evil, injustice and violence, through the saint’s intercession.

Notice that the center of the text is Jesus Christ and God’s mercy. Saint George appears as one who intercedes, not as the source of power. In some places the devotion also blends with other religious traditions; here we speak of the Christian tradition.

Keep reading on the next page →

Pages: 1 2 3 4

How to pray it with trust

Pray calmly, quietly or in silence, ideally at a fixed time.
